THE DEPOSIT OF FAITH

Catholicism holds that the doctrines found within Sacred Scripture, which encompasses the Bible, and Sacred Tradition, as upheld by the teachings and practices of the Church, are authoritative because both originate from God’s divine revelation. This belief underscores the unity and interdependence of these two sources of faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church elaborates on this relationship by stating, “Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture make up a single sacred deposit of the word of God” (97). This means that Sacred Tradition, which includes the teachings passed down through generations of Church leaders and ecumenical councils, complements and interprets the written word of Scripture, facilitating a deeper understanding of God’s message to humanity. Through this duality, Catholics believe they can more fully grasp the truths essential for salvation and live according to God’s will. - MC
